Former NFL Star Rudi Johnson Dies at 45

MIAMI, FLORIDA – Former NFL running back and Auburn University standout Rudi Johnson has died at the age of 45, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO). Authorities reported that initial findings suggest the cause of death may have been suicide, though the investigation remains ongoing.

Johnson, best remembered for his time with the Cincinnati Bengals (2001–2007), was one of the league’s most consistent rushers in the mid-2000s. He recorded three straight seasons with more than 1,000 rushing yards, including his career-best 1,454 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2004, which earned him a Pro Bowl selection. His 48 rushing touchdowns remain the third-most in Bengals franchise history.

After seven seasons with the Bengals, Johnson played his final NFL year with the Detroit Lions in 2008, retiring with 5,979 career rushing yards and 49 touchdowns.

The Bengals released a heartfelt statement honoring Johnson’s Auburn Legacy

Before his NFL career, Johnson dominated the college stage with the Auburn Tigers in 2000, rushing for 1,567 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year and finished tenth in Heisman Trophy voting that season. Auburn honored him with a statement on Tuesday:

“We mourn the loss of 2000 SEC Player of the Year Rudi Johnson. One of the best to ever wear the orange and blue. Rudi’s family, friends & teammates are in our prayers.”
